Building The Research Base For Children's Mental Health Services

KRISTA KUTASH is the deputy director of the Research and Training Center for Children's Mental Health and an assistant professor with the Department of Child and Family Studies, Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida.

Albert J. Duchnowski

ALBERT J. DUCHNOWSKI is a professor in the departments of Child and Family Studies and Special Education at the University of South Florida and deputy director of the Research and Training Center for Children's Mental Health.

Diane L. Sondheimer

DIANE L. SONDHEIMER is deputy chief of the Child, Adolescent, and Family Branch Center for Mental Health Services. She also oversees a portfolio of research demonstration projects that test the effectiveness of innovations in organizing, delivering, and financing mental health services for children, adolescents, and their families.

The recent history of research on the service delivery system for children and adolescents who have serious emotional disabilities and their families is summarized. The article provides an overview of the changes in the response by the children's mental health system to this population, with an emphasis on developments in service delivery system and service demonstration research and evaluation efforts. The role of research is examined in terms of its critical importance in improving the system of care for these children and their families.
